Commando is a 1985 American action film about a retired elite special forces team leader who is framed for the murder of the Vice President and must now clear his name. The movie was written and directed by Mark L. Lester, and was largely filmed in Israel as part of an agreement between that country's government and 20th Century Fox to promote tourism. It was shot in the fall of 1984. The film's lead villain, Bennett, is named after film director John M. "Bud" Cardos, who served as second unit director for this film. The film also features cameos by Arnold Schwarzenegger, whose acting career was just beginning to take off at the time, and professional wrestler André the Giant. It is also one of Charles Napier's final films before his death in 1991. John Matrix leads an elite special forces team into Liberia to rescue U.S. diplomat Jefferson Appleton from renegade general Ira Hardt (Napier). Hardt has just assassinated Appleton's wife and kidnapped the diplomat's infant daughter so Matrix can't intervene. Hardt wants to use the girl as a bargaining chip to force President Ellen Johnson (Lester) to sign a treaty with his African government. Matrix and Hardt begin negotiating, but Hardt double-crosses him, wanting to murder Matrix and take CIA agent Anna (Pinkett) in order to fulfill all of his goals in one fell swoop. From that point onward, Matrix must fight both Hardt and his own government for control of the CIA agent. Matrix kills Hardt and rescues Anna, but a government assassin called Bennett (Schwarzenegger) is dispatched to eliminate them both. He forms a connection with Anna. Matrix manages to trick Bennett into shooting his own partner, who was threatening Anna's safety, and then kills him in a car chase through the streets of New York City. In the final scene, Matrix goes back to his island home in the South Pacific with his daughter and Anna.
The movie received mixed reviews from critics and has a rating of 45% on Rotten Tomatoes based on 12 reviews with an average rating of 4.9 out of 10. The movie performed poorly at the box office, grossing only $18 million against a production budget of $20 million. The DVD was released on December 27, 2006. The soundtrack to the film was composed by Basil Poledouris. It is notable for having a different soundtrack from the score to the same film composed by James Horner, which was released as a promotional CD. The main theme of Horner's score uses elements from "Fugue for Tinhorns" from "Guys and Dolls". Other excerpts from that musical are used throughout his score as well as excerpts from "Fiddler on the Roof".
